About Christi Duncan

H

ello, my name is Christi. I am a Manual Therapist that holds licenses in Texas as a Registered Nurse, a Massage Therapist and Massage Therapy Instructor. I have been helping others on their path towards wellness for more than 30 years. I work with the body’s fascia and soft tissues under the lens of Anatomy Trains’ Myofascial Meridians and Upledger’s CranioSacral System to treat dysfunction rather than symptoms. I simply help people become un-stuck.

Though my days in the Emergency Room are over, the knowledge I gained from that experience shows up every day.  Knowledge of the body, it’s systems, their functions, movement, stagnation, pain, trauma, emotions, nutrition, and energy are just some of the subjects I talk with my clients about every day.

My Clients

I work with individuals that are in acute pain such as pain from an injury and those that suffer from chronic pain that is longer lasting. They all are wanting to find a way out of their suffering.

I see people every day with neck, back, rib, knee and hip pain from car crashes, falls and from simply sitting all the time.  Thoracic Outlet Syndrome seems to afflict all desk jockeys these days.  They have herniated discs, PT isn’t helping and have been told they need injections or surgery. Some of you have been told that this is just how it is when you get older.

All Not True!

I also work with individuals with chronic pain (mental, physical, emotional) that may be manifesting as all-over-body-pain. Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue are two examples of this.  Maybe you feel like you are stuck in fight or flight, have a history of traumatic events in your life, hold your breath, abdominal issues, anxiety, panic attacks, headaches, frozen shoulder, or sciatica-type symptoms.

A willingness to look at the difficult areas of your life that are contributing to your stuck-ness may be necessary to move toward wellness.

Manual Therapy in an Integrative Bodywork Session can address all of these!

Pain can come from a structure that is out of alignment, a system that is toxic or lacking nutrients, or a soul in need of some emotional healing.

My Journey…

You Are Not Alone

My journey towards wellness began about 30 years ago just weeks after the birth of my son.  He was less than a month old when suddenly I became inflamed, fatigued, anxious, short of breath and highly reactive to chemicals and foods. My immune system was on fire. I was twenty-four years old yet I felt like I was going to die. None of them seemed at all concerned at finding the cause of my new pain, but offered narcotics, anxiety meds and muscle relaxants. I didn’t take them.

On what seemed like my worst day ever, I felt defeated, exhausted and hopeless. I was sitting in my car on the side of the road crying. I had this brand new sweet baby and no one could tell me why almost over-night I became sick. I was fine one day and sick the next. How could this happen so fast?

The Environmental Health Center

This side-of-the-road moment led me to Dr. Rea at the Environmental Health Center in Dallas.  He was the original Functional Medicine Doctor before there was such a title.  Dr. Rea, Dr. Ross and Dr. Johnson were doctors that actually were interested in finding the cause of illness.  They weren’t popular in some circles. When Western Medicine was working on its band-aid approach, these physicians were listening to their patients and putting some important pieces of the puzzle together around food, toxins and our environment.  They tested for food and environmental sensitivities, gave IV infusions of Immunoglobulin, Vitamin C and glutathione long before anyone else was.  They were also treating patients for Candida when other physicians didn’t believe it could be the cause of illness.  Many of their patients had been exposed to mold in their homes, glyphosate in their yards, and volatile organic compounds in closed, unventilated spaces.  On my worst day ever, I needed a sign.

It took weeks and weeks to get through the testing. I was reacting to everything, but why? I was treated for a systemic yeast problem for a month. My inflammation was decreasing, but still not gone. Dr. Ross in 1995, grasping at straws, thought maybe we can test for Celiac.  These doctors looked for things that no-one else believed were possible.

Gluten!

This was life changing. I had an answer. I changed my diet instantly. Dr. Johnson started his own practice, Johnson Medical  Associates. I followed him there to continue my treatment. There I met with a nutritionist that taught me about food families which helped me learn what to avoid, and helped me find things that were safe to eat. There weren’t many. Once eliminating gluten, my inflammation decreased and I stopped reacting to many foods on my allergy list.   When I first started getting sick, I had gained fifty pounds of fluid. Within a couple of weeks, I began to feel better and that fifty pounds of water started falling off. Finally I was getting my life back.

It took several months for me to feel like myself again. I adhered strictly to a gluten-free diet. It was hard, but it was worth it. If I strayed from the plan, then I reacted to other things and inflammation would quickly return. I learned so much through this experience.  At some point, I began working with Dr. Johnson at Johnson Medical Associates.  He needed a nurse and I needed to keep learning.

It was my illness, my curiosity, and my drive to keep looking for answers that saved me.
